January 2019 Athlete of the Month Lauren Ayala

A personal goal that motivated Lauren to start doing Functional Fitness was that she wanted to try something different at the time. She had been kickboxing for 3 years and her sensei and boyfriend at the time had just started doing it. Her sensei started making her do certain movements, like wall balls, during our workouts which made her curious. She had also put on a little weight so she decided to give Crossfit a try.
Laurens favorite part of Crossfit is the weightlifting aspect of it. She also likes that she doesn’t have to think about her workout; she goes in, the coaches tell her what to do, and she gets a good workout in. She also likes the social aspect and the friends she has made because of Functional Fitness.
Lauren has been doing Functional Fitness for 5 years this month.
Lauren didn’t play sports in high school. “I am not athletic. I tried softball for one season and I wasn’t very good at it LOL.”
Laurens favorite movements are hang cleans because they are just fun to her and back squats because they make her feel strong. She also likes box jumps but not excessive amounts 🙂
Functional Fitness has overal helped build her confidence when it comes to her appearance. She has always struggled with her weight since she was a kid and in her mind she felt that being skinny was the only way to feel good. However, doing Crossfit has made her embrace the fact that she is not tiny and thin; it’s made her feel strong and she has muscles that she has never seen before. She is also able to do a lot of things without anyone’s help such as lifting and moving things (especially when she has to pack up her classroom every summer).  Lauren is in her 10th year teaching. She taught 5th grade for 8 years and now she is in her second year teaching 8th grade Intensive Reading (She teaches all of the struggling readers). It’s been a crazy transition but it’s growing on her. And the kids notice her calloused hands; she’s heard many times “Ewww Miss what happened to your hands?” LOL
A current goal that Lauren is .trying to reach is that she wants to be able to string more than 2-3 pull-ups together (later on get chest to bars). She would also like to increase her max clean; that movement has been hard for her to build due to her wrist injury.
